Saniel Bonder and Linda Groves-Bonder on SIA Radio

Summary of the show: Saniel Bonder and Linda Groves-Bonder are among the world’s leading democratizers of embodied, mutual awakening for everyday people and are acclaimed by the likes of Ken Wilber, Peter Russell, and Genpo Roshi. During this radio show with host Stephen Dinan, Saniel and Linda discuss their evolutionary approach to spirituality and such concepts as greenlighting, waking down, the second birth, and going beyond spiritual feudalism. Their innovative teachings help us outgrow learned and conditioned spiritual fight or flight mechanisms that have kept us at war with parts of ourselves we thought we had to overcome to realize our greater nature. They also discuss why these approaches are vital for us to heal the spirit/matter split in the world, help free creative energy in leaders, and address environmental and other collective challenges.

One Hour to Conscious Tweeting

This article is for people who are committed to conscious living, have a full schedule, and want to start using Twitter effectively and quickly. My goal is to get you fully launched in one hour. If you want to spend an optional hour in a later session to become more advanced, there are some tips for that as well. To keep your launch session to an hour, stick to the suggested time limits.

1) Create a Twitter account at http://www.twitter.com Use a short name (preferably your own), fill out your profile and add your picture. Use key words (“psychotherapist” “author” “social media”) that will identify you to the right audiences in your One Line Bio. Listing key nouns is an effective way to summarize your bio and connections. If you don’t have a picture, Tweeters will not take you seriously and will not follow you, so add immediately. (5 min.)

2) Learn the basic Twitter protocols – As a compressed medium for communication, Twitter uses a lot of shorthand. Read this short overview of the story of Twitter and basic shorthands and protocols for Tweeting. (3 min.)

3) Start following people. Until you follow others, you are invisible – around 50% of people will follow you back, which then builds you a network. Without a network, Twitter is not very valuable. The goal is to follow people you know, who you find interesting, or are like-minded in your niche. First step is click on the “find other people” tab and go to “find on other networks," which allows you to import a list of your contacts in a few steps to find out who is on Twitter. Just checking “follow all” is easiest. You can then scan Twitter’s “suggested users” for people they recommend (heavy on celebs, but useful). Remember you can always “unfollow” in the future, so it’s better to follow too many at the beginning and scale back. (10 minutes)

4) Find other like-minded tweeters – I have assembled a Shift List of 60 key conscious leaders, authors, and visionaries on Twitter that provide high value. The fastest way to follow all these folks is to go to Shift List and follow instructions. The Twibes.com site is a great way to find others in your areas of interest (such as “photography” or “green”) and we have a Shift Movement twibe of more than 500 you can use to find conscious people. Next, I would recommend following 10-20 hard-core Twitterers (usually have a high volume of posts), who often aren’t as prominent in the world but have mastered the medium, and offer great recs of people and resources to follow. Try WeFollow for top tweeters by category or network builders such as @thecitizen or @greengirls (green) @brightmichelle or @superspiritgirl (spiritually oriented). Look for people with 1K or more followers (key that they have more followers than following). Here’s a list of 77 top green tweeters and an article for the "Ultimate List" that includes dozens of these "best of" lists (1000 recs altogether). You can also look at who some of the people you respect most follow. Also, everyone should follow @mashable to get top articles, recs, and tips about Twitter and using social media. I suggest rapidly following 100 or more people right out of the gates in the first session using the above tips, remembering you can later “unfollow” those that you don’t enjoy. (30 minutes)

5) Read some of the Tweets of those you’re now following – the point here is to just get a flavor for the kinds of things people are tweeting about without going too far down the rabbit hole or becoming just a passive reader. (5 minutes).

6) Start tweeting yourself – Don’t wait to do this since the key to Twitter is offering VALUE. Start tweeting in your first session after the above steps since people won’t follow people who haven’t posted much. So think of 3-4 quick messages in different categories. For example, something interesting you’ve done in the last 24 hours, a link to an article on the web that you found inspiring (use http://bit.ly to shorten the address), and a question about what you’d like to connect around on Twitter. Spend 1 minute or less on each: be spontaneous, authentic. (5 minutes)

7) Retweet – people like it when others retweet their tweets, so read through the list of recent tweets from people you are following, find something you think is important or useful, copy it, paste in your update window prefaced by “RT @theiraccount” and hit send. Do this with a handful of people’s quality Tweets but don’t overdo it since part of the task (and joy) is creating your own value. This starts to build connection with others since they will see you on their @ tab. (2 minutes)

Later session (optional - one hour)

8) Study someone who uses the medium very well to see how they use it. It’s interesting to go back over a whole week or more. I prefer someone who is not a celebrity and who doesn’t follow tons of people but has built a sizable base from quality Tweeting. Robin Sharma is a perfect example. (10 minutes)

9) Respond and initiate conversation – go to the @replies tab to see if anyone included you, as an “@stephendinan.” Respond to them with the arrow button to the right of the tweet. Engagement builds connection, even if it's only a few words. You can use the same format to send public messages to the people you like and respect most, responding to their tweets, questions, ideas, etc. This can build a direct pipeline to top CEOs, authors, etc. (15 minutes)

10) FollowFriday – is a weekly tradition for recommending people of interest and it’s the best way to find others to follow in your niche. I recommend searching for #followfriday and whatever other keywords interest you, which allows you to find good recs of people to follow in your space. Example: #followfriday green. Recommending others via #followfriday is a great way to build bridges. (10 minutes)

11) Search for keywords of interest to you to see who might be out there writing about similar things and thus other interesting people to engage. (10 minutes)

12) TweetLater – I recommend setting up an account here, which allows you to space out quality tweets over the course of the day and plan in advance. Most tweets are also seen in the first five minutes of posting, so posting in the middle of the night is not helpful. Personally, I find TweetLater also produces higher quality tweets because I can think more deeply, often away from the computer about what I want to share. For people with busy schedules, you can write up some useful Tweets in one session each week and spread them out, which doesn’t prevent you from also doing spontaneous ones each day. Schedule sends for regular biz hours for maximum visibility. You can also add an auto-responder when people follow you. (15 minutes)

After launching, think of Twitter as something you jump onto for 5-10 minutes a few times each day that will eventually build a global base of interesting people who know about you and your work and offer targeted information to you. Don’t overpromote your own stuff but try to offer real value with each tweet and you’ll build a good network. You can go far deeper, but that’s sufficient to start building value.

For the more spiritually-inclined, here’s an article I wrote about what I see as Twitter’s deeper purpose, and the story of how Twitter can be used for philanthropic purposes such as spreading peace.

Happy Tweeting! And please also follow me @stephendinan - I offer lots of resources for shifting our culture forward.

Why Gay Marriage is Important for All Americans

On HuffingtonPost: http://bit.ly/14777a
or Intent.com: http://bit.ly/zPCaQ

The California Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Proposition 8 in banning gay marriage is a setback not only for gay rights, but for the psychological and spiritual growth of our country. Gay marriage concerns far more than the 5-10% of our population that identifies as gay. America’s deepest tradition is the protection and expansion of individual rights and freedoms with a goal of liberty and justice for all.

Today, the movement to overturn millennia of discrimination against gay people represents the next major expansion of individual rights and freedoms. Even as a straight man, I see this not just through the lens of fairness but as an essential part of the evolution of America. While most commentators see Proposition 8 as a temporary setback in the context of an otherwise clear march towards equality, it does provide an appropriate moment to reflect upon why gay marriage is important not just for gay people but for all Americans.

At the core of the debate is the right of same-sex couples to marry and receive the full benefits and blessings accorded others under the law. Marriage is the most sacred contract sanctioned by our nation, consecrating the love between two beings and forging a legal partnership that also creates a stronger container for families. As such, it is a key place where spiritual values meet secular values. So long as gay marriage is outlawed, we are, as a country, creating a definition of sacred that excludes 5-10% of our citizens and the way they love. This message creates a profoundly split social order and has insidious effects on the psychology of straight people as well.

The suffering that comes from this form of apartheid is not as obvious as when we have separate drinking fountains for “white” and “colored.” And yet, the number of people directly affected is parallel to the 10% of the US population that was black in the 1950s and faced with “separate-but-equal” facilities.

The indirect effects of discrimination against gay people hurt everyone. For straight people, the lack of full sanction for gay relationships creates a more polarized social view of gender. Children are particularly sensitive to what is socially approved and what is not. Boys raised in a homophobic culture learn to overemphasize masculine qualities, fear feminine qualities, and create more macho personas, as well as to fear being “loving” with their male friends. Girls are similarly affected in a negative way. As both learn to be less authentic to their true nature in an effort to fit social ideals, they create long-term psychological challenges for themselves. The pain of inauthenticity flares up in substance abuse, violence, sexual dysfunction, isolation, and divorce. We all crave being loved for who we are. To the degree that we create an inauthentic facade, we never have the feeling of full loving acceptance.

Suicide rates have long been higher among homosexual teens and, by inference, we would expect that heterosexual teens with some same-sex attractions would also have lower self-esteem and higher suicide rates. A single suicide can have a devastating effect on dozens of other friends, families, and allies. I would know. One of my close friends from high school, who came out to me and a few others in college, was one of those suicide statistics and his sexual orientation certainly played a role in his eventual fate.

When we multiply negative self-esteem effects by millions, we realize how many social problems arise when homosexual feelings are defined as sinful or bad. The ban on same-sex marriage thus creates distortions in our children’s development that have profound affects on our national health and happiness. For example, since we have a primarily male power structure in America, a more macho social ideal for masculine behavior leads to an overemphasis on aggression, which creates more conflict and violence than may be necessary. The costs to our society of our psychological gender imbalance may be enormous.

The legalization of gay marriage will not, by itself, alleviate all our society’s imbalances. What it will do, though, is create a more expanded sense for what we hold as sacred and worthy of respect. That will trickle down, creating more permission for every child to be authentic to themselves and, in the end, forge a society with a healthier balance of masculine and feminine qualities, less conflict, and more overall happiness. This will not only have benefits for gay citizens but literally for all Americans.

For religious Christians who tend to be more strongly oriented to preserving the social order, legalizing same-sex marriage will ultimately allow an expansion of their heart. As it is now, Jesus admonition to “love thy neighbor as thyself” is at odds with the ban on same-sex marriages. By creating social approval for same-sex marriage, we eventually make it easier for religious people to put their core teachings into practice and love gay people fully.

The movement for gay marriage is, at the deepest level, a movement for the psychological and spiritual growth of our country. By honoring same-sex marriage in the same way as heterosexual unions, we send the signal to the next generation of children that their natural inclinations are, well, natural. This in turn allows all Americans to grow up in a more authentic way. Men can be less hyper-masculine or defended and women can be more connected and loving as well.

The full legalization of gay marriage in America will represent a pivotal moment in evolving an ever-more-perfect union that is a beacon for liberty and justice for all. May that moment come quickly and gracefully.

Spreading Peace on Twitter

Twitter’s name makes it sound like it circulates only inconsequential gossip. However, its ability to propagate ideas more rapidly than any medium in history means that it can also be used for profoundly evolutionary purposes.

On Tuesday, May 19th, Deepak Chopra (@Deepak_chopra) offered a simple 88 character tweet on Twitter “Please take the vow of non-violence with me today: http://www.itakethevow.com Please RT!"

What followed offered a fascinating experiment in this medium’s capacity to be a catalyst for something quite noble – the spreading of peace on earth. Within one hour, there had been one hundred retweets of his post and by the end of the day, over two hundred. Each retweeter offered their encouragement to followers to join them in the vow of non-violence in thought, words, and actions. Hundreds did so. Many more watched the inspiring music video and the story of the origin of the global movement, which has resulted in close to 20,000 people taking the vow since it began in November of 2008.

This vow is not casual or easy; it is a permanent commitment to leave behind violence as an acceptable way of engaging others, even in our minds and in our words. Frankly, it took some serious reflection on my part as to whether I was ready.

The vow also includes a commitment to encourage two others to join you in taking the vow. It’s thus designed as a simple viral strategy to create peace on earth, with a goal of eventually having 100 million people take the vow. That sounds audacious until we look at the current rate of growth. From 450 people who took the vow in November to nearly 20,000 who have done so six months later, the spread has been rapid, with close to a doubling of signatories each month. If the current rate of growth continues at the same pace, I Take the Vow would reach 100 million signatories by mid-June of 2010.

I believe this can be a powerful demonstration experiment of the deepest spiritual purpose of Twitter: for us to evolve our culture rapidly and to create major change on the planet with ease. Taking and then spreading a powerful vow that can truly lead to peace on earth takes only personal willingness, a few minutes and a few dozen words. If each of us took the vow ourselves and Twittered something as simple as the following tweet every month, the end result will be a very real contribution to reaching 100 million people on planet earth committed to peace.

I took the vow of non-violence with @Deepak_chopra ! Join me at http://www.itakethevow.com Please RT!

Join me in a simple strategy for planetary change that can also unleash the highest potential of Twitter as a medium to empower the best in us. As we demonstrate what is possible with peace, the same approach can be applied to sustainability, health, poverty alleviation, and more.
